Previous Roadmap

2009

Windows Server Longhorn SP1 is expected to be released in 2009. This is the first Service Pack for Windows Server Longhorn.

Windows Server Longhorn R2 is expected to be released in 2009. Release 2 will include additional functionality and incorporate SP1.

Intel 32nm process (P1268) is expected to come online in 2009.

Intel Westmere CPU, the 32nm version of Nehalem, is expected to be released in 2009.

Microsoft Office 14 is expected to be released H1 2009. Office 14 (13 was skipped for superstitious reasons) is expected to focus on productivity, communication and collaboration, enterprise content management, business process and business intelligence, the Office platform (i.e., Office for developers), manageability, and security.

Windows Vienna, the successor to Longhorn, is expected to be released in 2009. In addition to the featureset of Windows Vista, Vienna is expected to feature the WinFS filing system (under a different name), originally scheduled for Longhorn, but now delayed until Vienna. WinFS (Windows Future Storage) is a major upgrade to the storage subsystem, based on "Yukon" SQL Server technology, allowing users to perform queries on it, much as they would a database. Vienna is also likely to feature Microsoft's Hypervisor (Virtualisation) technology and a new shell designed by the Office team who created the Ribbon UI. Despite the new features, Vienna is not a major windows release.

2010

Intel Gesher CPU is expected to be released in 2010. Gesher is the successor to the Nehalem architecture.

2011

Intel 22nm process (P1270) is expected to come online in 2011.

Windows Server Vienna, formally codenamed Blackcomb, is expected to be released in 2011.
